A lively and highly successful blitz took place last night at Craobh Rua pitch, where the focus was firmly on promoting the use of Gaelic place names within the local community. The event brought together children from P1 to P7, all of whom enthusiastically contributed by bringing in the Irish versions of their local place names. These were creatively incorporated into a series of newly designed placename signs, which will now be displayed proudly around the clubhouse.

The initiative formed part of a wider national campaign led by Conradh na Gaeilge, aimed at restoring and normalising the everyday use of Gaelic place names across Ireland. It also benefited from the strong support of Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Donnacha, with Seán Ó Maoilsté of the Foundation attending on the night and offering fulsome praise for the club’s commitment and community spirit.

Families were also included in the project, with each receiving specially prepared postcards featuring their local Irish place names to take home, helping to extend the learning and awareness beyond the pitch and into daily life. The initiative is part of the “Caife Aoidh” project, building on the work and legacy of local language activist and teacher Aodh Ó Luaois. Children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of Aodh took part in the evening’s activities as organisers and young players in a shared celebration of language and heritage.

Beyond the educational aspect, the evening was designed around fun and participation, and it fully succeeded in that aim. The warm summer weather added to the atmosphere, with children and parents alike embracing the Gaelic spirit of the occasion. The post-event refreshments of drinks and treats were gladly received and added a relaxed finish to a very active and engaging night.

Is iomaí bealach beag a thosaíonn mór-athrú, agus is ar an pháirc agus i measc na ndaoine óga a fhásann beocht na teanga. Nuair a úsáidtear ainmneacha na háiteanna  sa Ghaeilge sa ghnáthshaol, neartaítear nasc na bpobal lena n-oidhreacht agus lena bhféiniúlacht féin. Ní teanga na scoile amháin í an Ghaeilge, ach teanga an tsaoil, an imeartha agus an phobail. Trí thionscadail mar seo, cuirtear síol na teanga i gcroíthe na nglún óg a fhásfaidh suas léi go nádúrtha. Beatha teanga í a labhairt agus í a fheiceáil!! Agus is ann don todhchaí nuair a labhraítear í le bród agus le háthas i ngach cúinne den phobal.

Overall, the blitz at Craobh Rua was widely regarded as a tremendous success—blending sport, language, and community in a way that highlighted both pride in local identity and enthusiasm for the Irish language.
A huge thank you to our fantastic Sports Inspire boys who gave up their evening to help referee at our Hurling Blitz. Your enthusiasm, leadership and willingness to support our younger players made the event a great success.

"Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí" – praise the young and they will flourish.
Our younger children look up to you and see you as role models, and you show them exactly what teamwork, kindness and community spirit look like.

Thank you for inspiring the next generation of players.
